THANK YOU FOR DONATING LEAVE!!

About a month ago I requested leave due to a sudden illness experienced by my son.  I would like to take a
moment and thank anyone who was kind enough to donate some of their leave to me.  I am overwhelmed
with the generosity and support I have received from the members of this professional community.

With Sincere Gratitude,

Theresa Hayes

Bright Lights shines for summer 2009

Summer is around the corner. Many parents are already planning summer projects with their children, plans
to read together and go to the library, set up an exercise program, go outdoors on nature hunts, plant and
grow vegetables in the garden, and integrate childrens’ interests with academic activities. It’s important for
students to stay active so they avoid the “summer slide” where studies show that they can lose 2 ½ months of
math and reading skills in the summer.

At Bright Lights, summer learning is fun, engaging, creative, and focused on their interests. There are over
120 classes and nine day camps offered. Half day classes include Paint, Sculpt Cook and Draw;
Mindboggling Insects, and Secret Codes & Formulas. Two half-day classes can be combined with Lunch
Care and Before Care to create a full day (7:30am – 4:00pm) to help working parents.  Full 9:00-4:00 day
camps include the popular American Girls Day Camp, Hogwarts (just in time for the New Harry Potter Movie)
and Outdoor Explorers.

The cancellation of the Japanese students this summer creates an opportunity for students in grades 6-9 to
register for our popular middle school classes the week of June 22-26 from 9am-noon. These classes
include Games for the Brain, Woodworking and many others.

Other middle school opportunities include the career camps. For the 15th summer, UNL and Bright Lights
are partnering to offer day-long career day camps for grades 6-8.   Engineering, Architecture and TV
Broadcasting are each  being offered 9:00-4:00 July 6-10 with the help of the respective UNL Colleges.  In
these camps, students might conduct a nanotechnology experiment, design scale models of buildings, or
run the large studio cameras. It’s been said that the road to college begins or ends in middle school,  and
most high school students formalize their educational plans between 8th and 10th grade, suggesting that
this the time to influence their educational aspirations.  Sign up with a friend!

Bright Lights offers need-based scholarships, before care and lunch care. There are no residency
requirements so all students are welcome.  Students can stay with grandparents, family friends and non
custodial parents. Register today at
www.brightlights.org or call 402.420.1115 where you can register and
pay on line with credit cards of e-checks.

Bright Lights has been a summer tradition for over 20 years in Lincoln. Through hands-on classes and day
camps, Bright Lights and its teachers create unique learning experiences for six sessions each summer.
These classes provide academic, hobby and career experiences for students from Kindergarten through
ninth grade. Most classes for summer 2009 will be held at Randolph School, 37th & D, the weeks of June 15-
19; June 22-26 and July 6-10.

New York Times best-selling author David Sedaris to sign books at the University of Nebraska Lincoln
Bookstore on June 20, 2009.

Lincoln, Nebraska (June 20, 2009): David Sedaris will be making a book signing appearance at the
University Bookstore on the University of Nebraska Lincoln campus in support of the paperback release of
When You Are Engulfed In Flames, on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 7:00pm.  The University Bookstore is
located at 14th and R Street at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.  Copies of the book will be available for
sale at the event.

David Sedaris’ first break out recognition was in 1992 when National Public Radio broadcast his essay,
“SantaLand Diaries.”  Following this, he published Barrel Fever in 1994, a collection of essays and short
stories.  Sedaris released five more essay collections, Naked, Holiday on Ice, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress
Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and When Engulfed in Flames.  All Five have landed on the New York
Times Best Sellers list.  His work has been described as self-deprecating humorous autobiographies,
detailing his family life, middle class upbringing in Raleigh, North Carolina, Greek heritage, education, drug
use, homosexuality, and the time he spent in France with his boyfriend, Hugh Hamrick.

In When You Are Engulfed in Flames, David Sedaris again brings together a collection of essays so
uproariously funny and profoundly moving that his legions of fans will fall for him once more. He tests the
limits of love when Hugh lances a boil from his backside, and pushes the boundaries of laziness when,
finding the water shut off in his house in Normandy, he looks to the water in a vase of fresh cut flowers to fill
the coffee machine. From armoring the windows with LP covers to protect the house from neurotic songbirds
to the awkwardness of having a lozenge fall from your mouth into the lap of a sleeping fellow passenger on a
plane, David Sedaris uses life's most bizarre moments to reach new heights in understanding love and fear,
family and strangers. Culminating in a brilliantly funny account of his venture to Tokyo in order to quit
smoking, David Sedaris's sixth essay collection will be avidly anticipated.

The University Bookstore is dedicated to serving the University of Nebraska Lincoln faculty and students and
is open to the entire Lincoln, Nebraska community at large.  Regular store hours are [Monday – Friday: 8:00
am to 6:00 pm, Saturday: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, closed on Sunday. The bookstore is located on the lower level
of Nebraska Union on 14th and R Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. To reach the bookstore by phone call 402-472-
