Thank You for Donating Leave

To the LEA membership,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has donated leave to me.   You acts of kindness
have allowed me to put forth greater focus and energy into my recovery.  I do not know for certain who
have donated, however I want to let everyone know of the greatness that people have given me.  Next
month I will start radiation treatment after my bone marrow transplant.  Everyone’s act of kindness and
sacrifice has allowed me to not worry about health care in the coming month.  In addition, everyone’s
continued and constant showing of faith and friendship has been overwhelming this past year, yes it has
been over a year for this journey.  My family and I could not have continued on my recovery as smoothly as
we have without your help, thoughts and prayers.

Often when people act, others do not know.  I hope my email finds those in good spirit, and also
encourages us all to continue to act with faith and hope.

Thank you,

Tom Garay

Host Families Needed for 20 Teachers - Earn $75!

To:       LEA Members
From:  Dolores Mather, LEA-Retired Member
           488-4228, or
DCMather@aol.com

Joe McNulty, UNL Ed. Administration, has asked me to find week end hosts for 20 teachers who will be
attending a seminar at the University.  They are from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, India, Tajikistan,
and Turkmenistan.

They are teachers of English, History and Social Sciences.

He hopes to find home stays for them on the week end of November 1.  Hosts would pick them up at their
hotel on Saturday a.m., host them over night and return them to their hotel
Sunday, afternoon - November 2.

In return, host would be paid $75, per guest, and be invited to a going away party the following week end.

I have met previous participants, and found them to be most interesting and vivacious.

If interested, please contact Dolores Mather at 488-4228, or
DCMather@aol.com, by October 7.

Target Field Trip Grants
Provide Hands-On Learning Opportunities

Target has launched the Target Field Trip Grants program online application for 2008-09.  The initiative,
designed to help teachers bring learning to life outside the classroom, will distribute 5,000 grants of up to

Celebrate American Education Week
November 16-22

Each year, American Education Week presents all Americans with an opportunity to celebrate public
education and honor individuals who are making a difference in ensuring that every child receives a quality
education.

NEA instigated the celebration of American Education Week shortly after World War I. This 87th AEW
celebration spotlights the importance of providing every child in America with a quality public education
from kindergarten through college.

NEA’s annual tagline — Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility — reflects the
Association’s calling upon America to provide students with quality public schools so that they can grow,
prosper and achieve in the 21st Century.

This year, the Nov. 16–22 celebration features a special observance each day of the week. Those
observances include:

•        Monday, Nov. 17: Open House Day.
•        Tuesday, Nov. 18: Parents Day.
•        Wednesday, Nov. 19: Education Support Professionals Day.
•        Thursday, Nov. 20: Educator for a Day.
•        Friday, Nov. 21: Substitute Educators Day.

To help Nebraska teachers plan this celebration, the National Education Association has developed an
online toolkit with background information, activity ideas, and tips for working with the media, as well as
downloadable resources, templates and other items.

Using the online toolkit will help teachers create unforgettable events and activities that will highlight the
importance of bringing together everyone in the community — educators, parents, students, and public
figures — in an effort to build great public schools. The toolkit and resources can be found on the NEA Web
site at:

Cha-Ching!
With NEA Member Benefits

Your NSEA Membership Can Save You Money!

Buying power.

That’s what membership in your local association, the NSEA and the NEA gives you.

Collectively, the more than 3.2 million members of the NEA have a purchasing clout that results in potential
for huge savings for every member – savings enough to more than counter the cost of annual membership
dues.

Indeed, an overriding issue concerning most NEA members is their economic well-being. Specifically, NEA
members want to know how to increase their financial security while receiving a good value for their hard-
earned dollars.

The answer to those concerns is NEA Member Benefits, which plays an important role in addressing
economic issues that face NEA members. With a commitment to improving the lives of members,
combined with the influence of group buying power, Member Benefits offers top-quality products and
services like credit cards; money market accounts; auto and homeowner’s insurance; health and disability
insurance; loans and mortgages; life insurance; and more.

The NEA Member Benefits Corporation is a subsidiary of NEA, and was established to develop, implement
and administer NEA Member Benefits programs and services.

Add in the savings available by using NSEA’s Access Savings card (see story on Page 7), and NSEA
members can save hundreds of dollars each year. To see the full range of NEA Member Benefits
programs, go to this Web site:
http://www.neamb.com/index.jsp

To discover the savings available through the Access Card savings plan, have your NSEA Access
identification card number at hand (or look for your 10-digit identification number above your name on the
mailing label of this magazine), and  click on the Access Card icon near the upper right side of the NSEA

How to Spot a Flooded Car

Kristen Smith, Field Representative
Visit us on the web at
www.calcas.com/kksmith

Floods are one of the most common of all disasters, according to the Federal Emergency Management
Association (FEMA). Most communities have experienced flooding of some kind, due to spring rains, winter
snow thawing or heavy thunderstorms.

If such an event occurred where you live, and you drove through high waters, your car may have been
damaged. The damage may have occurred even if your vehicle was not completely covered in water. It all
depends on where the water reached and how much water the vehicle took in.

Use these tips from the Car Care Council to determine if your car has been damaged:
  • Check interior carpets, upholstery and the door and trim panels for dampness. If there is
dampness, it will need to be professionally cleaned.
  • Check the engine oil and transmission fluid dip sticks and differential plug. If the fluid appears
milky, diluted, is beige in color or no longer its original color, it is likely water has been introduced.
Do not drive the car, but have it towed to a mechanic or repair shop.
  • Check the air filter for water. If it is wet, replace the filter and change the oil.
  • Check the undercarriage, bumpers, radiator and frame for mud, grass, dirt, debris and rust.
  • Have the brake system checked by a professional.
  • Check the exterior lights for signs of moisture. Replace headlights and bulbs if they contain water.
  • Listen for abnormal sounds while the engine is running.
